Ingredients
Scale
Steak and Seasoning
- 1½ pounds top sirloin steak (cubed)
- 1 teaspoon sweet or smoked paprika
- salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (divided)
Sauce
- 3 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce
- ¼ cup water (or beef broth)
- 4 cloves garlic (minced)
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon sesame seed oil (or extra virgin olive oil)
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (or white vinegar)
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano (or your favorite dried herbs)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
Garnish
- sesame seeds (for garnish)
- sliced green onions (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prep: Pat dry the steak cubes with paper towels to remove moisture. Cut the steak into 1-inch cubes, then season evenly with paprika, salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Set aside to let the seasoning absorb.
- Make the sauce: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the low sodium soy sauce, water or beef broth, minced garlic, honey, sesame seed oil, rice vinegar, dried oregano, and cornstarch until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Set this sauce mixture aside.
- Cook the steak bites: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a cast iron skillet or heavy-bottomed pan over medium-high heat until it is shimmering and hot. Add half of the cubed steak to the skillet in a single layer and cook undisturbed for 2 minutes per side, until well browned and cooked to your liking. Remove the cooked steak bites from the skillet and repeat the process with the remaining oil and steak cubes. Set all cooked steak bites aside.
- Cook the sauce: Stir the prepared honey garlic sauce again to ensure cornstarch is well mixed. Pour about one-third of the sauce into the hot skillet and cook, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan to intensify the flavor. Allow the sauce to simmer and start to thicken slightly.
- Combine: Return all the cooked steak bites to the skillet with the sauce. Pour the remaining sauce over the steak and cook for an additional 1 to 2 minutes while stirring occasionally, allowing the sauce to thicken and coat the steak bites thoroughly.
- Finish and serve: Remove the skillet from heat. Transfer the honey garlic steak bites to a serving plate and drizzle with any remaining pan sauce. Garnish generously with sesame seeds and sliced green onions for a fresh, crunchy finish. Serve immediately and enjoy.
Notes
- To ensure tender steak bites, pat the meat dry before seasoning to promote better browning.
- Substitute beef broth for water in the sauce to enhance flavor depth.
- You can use other herbs like thyme or rosemary instead of oregano based on preference.
- Serve with steamed rice or roasted vegetables for a complete meal.
- For a spicier kick, add crushed red pepper flakes to the sauce mixture.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
