Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 1 lb pizza dough
- 3 ½ cups “00” flour
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 ¼ teaspoons yeast
Filling
- 6 oz package of pepperoni
- 8 oz fontina cheese (sliced)
- ½ lb sharp provolone cheese (sliced from the deli counter if available)
- 1 teaspoon oregano (divided; plus more for topping)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (divided; plus more for topping)
Topping
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon water
- 2 tablespoons parmesan cheese
- Italian seasoning (for sprinkling)
Serving
- Marinara dipping sauce (recipe or store-bought)
Instructions
- Prepare Dough: If making homemade pizza dough, prepare according to your recipe, then allow the dough to rest at room temperature for about 20-30 minutes. If using store-bought, simply let it rest for 20-30 minutes.
- Preheat Oven and Portion Dough: Preheat the oven to 425°. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions (approximately 2 oz each). Roll each portion into a 6” x 6” square on a lightly floured surface.
- Assemble Rolls: Lay 1 oz of fontina cheese and a few slices of provolone down the middle of each dough square, leaving a ½-inch border around the edges. Sprinkle approximately ⅛ teaspoon each of oregano and garlic powder over the cheese. Top with 8-10 slices of pepperoni.
- Roll and Seal: Starting from one side, carefully roll the dough around the cheesy pepperoni filling, tucking in the filling as needed. Pinch the ends to seal completely and place each roll seam side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Apply Egg Wash and Toppings: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to make the egg wash. Brush the tops of each roll generously with the egg wash. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese and Italian seasoning.
- Bake: Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown and crispy. Expect some cheese to ooze out, adding extra flavor.
- Serve: Allow rolls to cool slightly, then serve warm with marinara dipping sauce.
Notes
- Pepperoni rolls satisfy cravings for cheesy, filled pizza-dough pockets with minimal effort.
- Use homemade or store-bought pizza dough depending on convenience and preference.
- Adjust the cheese types or amounts to taste; sharp provolone adds a nice bite.
- Sprinkling Italian seasoning on top enhances the flavor and aroma.
- Serve with marinara sauce for dipping to complement the flavors.
