Description

A simple, flavorful, and healthy sautéed cabbage recipe featuring tender caramelized cabbage cooked with onions, garlic, and ghee for a delicious side dish.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables

  • 1 small green cabbage
  • 1 small yellow onion
  • 2 garlic cloves (minced)

Fat and Seasoning

  • 2 tablespoon ghee (or a blend of butter and olive oil)
  • Kosher salt (to taste)
  • Ground black pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Slice the cabbage: Cut the cabbage in half, then into quarters. Remove the core from each piece and chop across into thin slices. Slice the onion in half and then across into thin slices.
  2. Cook the onions: Melt the ghee in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté the onions for about one minute or until just starting to soften. Then add the minced garlic and stir for another minute.
  3. Cook the cabbage: Add the sliced cabbage to the skillet and sauté for about 15 minutes. Stir occasionally until the cabbage becomes soft and caramelized with a golden-brown color.
  4. Season and serve: Before serving, season with kosher salt and ground black pepper to taste. Toss everything to combine well and serve warm.

Notes

  • Sautéed cabbage makes a healthy and tasty side dish that pairs well with many main courses.
  • You can substitute ghee with butter or olive oil if preferred.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of apple cider vinegar or a pinch of red pepper flakes during cooking.
  • Cook over medium-high heat to achieve caramelization without burning.
  • Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheat easily.
